4A bold and flavorful pleasure  Sep 24, 2008
By Gary Coffrin
This is a robust blend of Ceylon and Kenya teas from PG Tips, one of the UK's most popular brands. On a whim, I purchased this blend, attractively priced at the local Cost Plus World Market (in California).

The 80 bags weigh 250g total (8.8 ounces). Compare this to the Lipton available in the USA - 100 bags weigh 226g (8 ounces). Each PG Tips bag weighs 38 percent more than its Lipton counterpart. As expected, PG Tips makes a much stronger brew. The PG Tips bag has so much tea that I can easily brew a 12-14 ounce mug with a single bag.

Say what you want about Lipton, it is hard to ruin a cup with careless technique. You can steep Lipton much longer that the recommended 3-5 minutes, and have almost no bitterness. You can even reuse the bag - the tea will be weaker, but not terrible.

PG Tips has a some similarity in taste to Lipton's, but with much more richness, boldness, and bite. This is an eye-opening, caffeine-rich tea. For my tastes, I find that steeping PG Tips much longer than 2-3 minutes creates more bitterness than I like. I add water that is below the boiling point to reduce the release of tannins.

PG Tips uses a pyramid shaped bag that allows more room for tea leaves to expand while steeping. This pyramid bag is a point of differentiation - although their reasons for using it may have more to do with marketing strategy than significant benefits.

Cognoscenti usually prefer loose tea. Tea bags contain the less expensive "fannings" or "dust," remains from processing loose leaf tea. And with some others brands of tea (not PG Tips), many people can taste the paper used in the bag.

That said, if you (like I) sometimes appreciate the convenience of bags, I recommend trying PG Tips Special Blend as a very hardy and rich breakfast tea. I should also mention that I much prefer this blend to PG Tips regular black tea. The PG Tips Special Blend is more rich and complex than their everyday blend, and is well worth the slightly higher price.

5Nice cup of tea!  Nov 24, 2009
By Marshall's Sauces "Marshall"
I love PG Tips, I drink this brand of Tea daily - all day long. The Special Blend is a nice refined flavor. The Decaf PG Tips are also good if you need to cut back on your caffine.
The best prices I've found are on Amazon.com for PG Tips. Once in a while you'll find a good deal on eBay.
PG Tips are high quality and can be served at any "afternoon tea."
I've lived lots of places during my Air Force career and I've tasted LOTS of teas, PG Tips is consistantly good -- HEY! PG Tips also makes the best Iced Tea or "Sweet Tea" I've ever had! Goes great with a slab of ribs.

5Hooked on the special blend  Jan 17, 2009
By Bridgid Joseph
I lived in the UK for a little over a year, prior to going, I only drank PG tips (regular) but while I was there started on the special blend, and I can't go back to the other. It is a very strong brew, but really deep, rich flavors, and a very smooth finish. I solely drink tea, so I can be a bit of a tea snob, but this is the best tea for the price and flavor combination. There is NO comparison to Lipton's...if that is your current black tea of choice, baby step in with PG Tips regular blend first, you would find the special blend much too bitter!! Getting excited for a cuppa now!

5Totally satisfied  Feb 22, 2010
By D. C. Froburg "BjornOlafson"
I was looking for something with a little something more than the regular PG Tips. I got hooked on PG Tips in Spain, while studying. Now back in the USA, its hard enough to find the regular blend in your regular supermarket, so I jumped to try the special blend.

*The brew is strong! Sometimes I brew two bags, but with the special blend, I don't have to.
*I detect some subtle tones in this blend absent from the normal blend.
*I have found that I can leave the bag in for long periods of time, with no increase in bitterness.

On a side note, the shopping list from amazon has made it easier for me to keep items like this together and order them in time so I never run out...awesome!

4Great tea!  Nov 01, 2009
By S. M. Snyder
I love PG Tips! I personally prefer the regular blend, though I do also enjoy the Special blend. For me, the Special blend is a little too smooth and delicate, and I find the original to be more flavorful. But this is a wonderful rich tea that my family always enjoys.
